Are you being ripped off by a contractor?

CBC The Fifth Estate
Episode on Sat. May 28 2011
Roofer Rip-off, Buyer Beware.

Is your roofing contractor legitimate? Or are you going to be ripped off?

That’s the question which was posed on this past Saturdays CBC , The Fifth Estate. What a great show!

We hear the nightmares but are they really true? My answer is absolutely 110%. Horror stories happen every day.

Customers did not receive what they were promised, homes left in a mess, and others being completely ripped off with no where to go.

You as a consumer or a building contractor need to do the right amount of homework ALL the time.

Criteria must haves.
 1. Current WSIB , up to date account. Get a hard copy.
2. Fall Protection certified. Get a copy of the card,
3. Contractors liability Insurance, get a hard copy.
4. WHIMIS and First Aid certified.
5. Current references. Get it in writing and phone or go by and see the projects.
6. A written contract that is signed by both parties and clearly understood.
7. Supplier name and number, call to see how your contractor handles their material supplier business relationship.
8. A friend/associate, that has used their services fairly current, is a great help.

These are just a few good points that can help you make a solid decision in choosing the right roofing contractor.

Rising oil prices, how did that happen? Facts the petroleum industry doesn’t want you to know.

Is it Bin Laden, Iraq, Pakistan, Oil spills in Southern US, how about Libya?

The production costs of oil and the demand remains similar or even less than a year ago. How does the price at the pump and the price of asphalt petroleum based, such as roofing materials price continue to increase more than thirty percent in one year. The real price per barrel, the true value, should be around $65 to $70 dollars per barrel.

Where does the more than 100 %( $125 to $130/barrel) mark-up come from.

Point your finger to….The Stock/Future Markets.

Banks, Financial Houses and Major Capital firms are responsible. Massive amount of oil “future stock” are traded on a regular basis. The amount of capital injected daily on “Futures” (shares that don’t exist, but gambling on rising market prices) are purchased solely on speculation, drive prices to what we see today. The futures bought and sold are enough to greatly influence world markets.

Regulators need to step in once again or the world will have another financial meltdown. The US and other countries played the same game on real estate markets and we know how that worked out.

RCS has record last two quarters, for year end of 2011!

2010 started out on a lighter note for many of us in the construction industry, whether you were a home builder, property manager, architect , general contractor, supplier to the trades,  or involved in any way.

We all have seen many contracts get scratched until next year or they just didn’t happen at all.

But as the Fall came on, our purchase orders for both capital contracts and new housing sales became very brisk.

Capital projects that RCS completed near end of 2010 were good ones!

One project worth mentioning was Preston Medows located in Cambridge Ontario.

This project was a new construction, mid-rise condominium building with 55 units constructed by RHC Design –Build, from Guelph ON. RHC is one Roofing Contracting Services long term client relationships that have been developed with the Reids family over the last 20 plus years.

The large sloped roofing area required 21000 square feet of architectural shingles by CRC, Bakor leak barrier protection, ice and water shield , custom metal valleys and custom metalwork flashings.

The specified ventilation products were the Weatherpro series, as well as Oatey plumbing flashings.

The flat roof system was installed with a 60mm TPO product by Firestone along with a Firestone hot air welded walkpad for trades to service air handling units on the flat, to prevent puncturing to our flat roof.

The roofing system did achieve some LEED rating points from the shingle system (includes some recycled granules) and the white flat roof.

All roofing work was completed under strict Safety regulations and went very well.

Many thanks to RHC site managers, and thanks to Fabian, and Mike , lead hands for RCS .

Project completed and delivered on time!
